National Non-Speaking/Non-Verbal Awareness Day.

September 30th is National Non-Speaking/Non-Verbal Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about individuals who do not use spoken words to communicate. This important observance aims to promote understanding, inclusion, and accessible communication methods for non-speaking individuals.

Key Goals of the Day

One of the key goals of National Non-Speaking/Non-Verbal Awareness Day is to recognize every voice. Just because someone does not speak verbally does not mean they do not have thoughts, feelings, or important things to say. It is crucial to understand that communication can take many forms, and each individual's voice should be valued and respected.Another important goal of this day is to champion human rights.

Communication is a fundamental human right that should be supported across all stages of life. By advocating for accessible communication methods and promoting inclusive environments, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to express themselves and be heard.National Non-Speaking/Non-Verbal Awareness Day also seeks to reduce isolation among non-speaking individuals. By building inclusive communities and fostering understanding and acceptance, we can create a world where no one is left out or isolated because of their communication differences.

Alternative Communication Methods

Communication goes beyond spoken words. There are various alternative communication methods that non-speaking individuals may use to express themselves effectively. Some of these methods include:

  • AAC devices: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps and speech-generating tablets provide non-speaking individuals with a way to communicate using text, symbols, or pictures.

  • Sign language: Systems like British Sign Language (BSL) or Makaton are visual languages that use hand gestures, facial expressions, and body movements to convey meaning.

  • Visual systems: Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), core boards, and communication books utilize visual aids to help non-speaking individuals communicate their needs and desires.

  • Physical cues: Gestures, facial expressions, body language, and eye-gazing technology can be valuable communication tools for non-speaking individuals.

By recognizing and supporting these alternative communication methods, we can ensure that non-speaking individuals have the tools they need to express themselves and engage with the world around them.
