March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) in the United States, established in 1987 to foster inclusion, highlight the contributions of people with developmental disabilities (DD), and break down community barriers. The 2026 campaign theme is “We're Here: Then, Now, Always,” highlighting the ongoing presence and rights of people with disabilities.

A developmental disability is a, often lifelong, condition that appears before age 22 that impacts physical, learning, language, or behavioral areas, such as autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, or intellectual disabilities.

As we observe Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month this March, it is important to reflect on the progress that has been made in promoting inclusion and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. This month serves as a reminder to celebrate the contributions and achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities, while also acknowledging the challenges they may face in their daily lives.

Many myths and misconceptions surround developmental disabilities, leading to stigma and discrimination. It is crucial to educate ourselves and others about the diverse abilities and strengths of individuals with developmental disabilities. By promoting awareness and fostering a culture of inclusion, we can create a more compassionate and understanding society for all.

One of the key goals of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is to advocate for equal opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities in various aspects of life. This includes ensuring access to quality education, meaningful employment opportunities, and recreational activities that promote social integration and community engagement.

Through education and advocacy, we can work towards breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive society where individuals with developmental disabilities are valued and respected. By listening to their voices, supporting their needs, and championing their rights, we can build a world that embraces diversity and celebrates the unique gifts of every individual.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness, promote understanding, and advocate for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. Let us come together as a community to celebrate diversity, foster inclusion, and build a more compassionate world for all.
